COVID-19 spreads fastest in Bangladesh among South Asian countries

Coronavirus infection is spreading fast in Bangladesh among the South Asian countries.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday disclosed that as many as 52,445 have been infected with coronavirus and 709 patients have died so far.

Bangladesh’s virus cases crossed 50,000 on the 87th day while the first infection was detected on 8 March.

On the contrary, India’s virus cases crossed 50,000 on the 98th day of the first detection of the virus. However, the number of deaths was higher among 50,000 patients in India.

Bangladesh recorded the highest 2,911 virus cases in a day on Tuesday while 37 people died in that 24 hours.

Earlier, the highest number of deaths was 40 in a day while the highest number of cases was 2,545.

Bangladesh detected its coronavirus case on 8 March after it had been traced first in Wuhan of China at the end of 2019.

In the beginning, the virus was limited among the returnees and their relatives, and later it spread among the mass people.

Sunday was the 13th week of coronavirus detection. In three days of this week, as many as 99 people have died and 7,838 people have been infected.

According to statistics, coronavirus is spreading fast in Bangladesh than in India.

In terms of area and population, India is much larger than Bangladesh. The number of population in India is 1.35b while 160 million in Bangladesh. In terms of infection, India is the 7th in the world. India is on top of South Asia.

As many as 199,757 people were infected in India till Tuesday afternoon, and 5,612 people died.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the first case was detected in India on 30 January.

India’s virus cases crossed 50,000 on 7 May on the 98th day.

On the contrary, Bangladesh crossed 50,000 in 87 days. In terms of infection, Bangladesh is 21st in the world while 3rd in South Asia. Pakistan is in the second position. The country’s virus cases crossed 50,000 in 87 days, too.

According to world meters, 2,099 people are infected in Nepal, 47 in Bhutan, 1643 in Sri Lanka, 1,829 Maldives, and 16,492 in Afghanistan.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and virologist Nazrul Islam said the country is heading towards high infections. It seems the infection will increase further, he added.
